  Alice Springs (originally named Stuart) is a remote town in Australia’s Northern Territory, halfway between Darwin and Adelaide, both 1,500km away. It is virtually at the geographical centre of Australia. Its 1871 origin as part of the Overland Telegraph Line (linking Darwin and Adelaide) is preserved in the vintage buildings and equipment at the Alice Springs Telegraph Station Historical Reserve.   Until the early 1930s, Alice Springs was the name given to the waterhole that was discovered and named by Government Surveyor WW Mills in March 1871, while exploring the MacDonnell Ranges during the construction of the Overland Telegraph Line. Alice Springs is named after Alice Todd, wife of the Superintendent of Telegraphs, Sir Charles Todd.
  Although the waterhole was originally thought to be a spring, the river Todd, which runs past the telegraph station, generally only flows for about 3 weeks every year and then dries up. After the flow, because of the geology in the immediate area, the watering hole forms here on the otherwise dry river bed.
